Escaping the Matrix

A lot of organizations are still set up as matrix organizations. In this talk, I will highlight the challenges and fundamental misunderstandings that matrix organizations have around Agile and show how organizations can find ways out of the situation by changing their organization structure. Some of the topics I’ll touch upon are Tuckman’s Stages of Team Development, organizational barriers, release pipelines, Mike Cohn’s Test Automation Pyramid, motivation, self-direction, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, autonomy, and Agile values.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Matrix organizations are an impediment for Agile
  2. Test departments are an impediment for Agile
  3. That projects “end” is a fundamental misunderstanding about software project management
  4. Project organizations outperform Matrix organizations because project organizations can be much more Agile
  5. Teal organizations outperform other organizations, and Agile wants Teal organizations.
