XP 2023 – XP Where are you?

So we have XP for about 25 years now. Where is XP in 2023? Has it been successful? Does it work? Who is using it? What has happened?

XP didn’t need to change a lot over the last 25 years. The values (Communication, Courage, Feedback, Respect, Simplicity) remain the same and relevant, and the XP feedback loops have evolved just slightly to include CI/CD, static code analysis in the build, and static code analysis in the IDE.

Even seemingly new/younger things like BDD, DDD, DevOps, psychological safety, and software teaming (fka mob/ensemble programming) can be traced back to and found in XP.

The official market adoption rate of XP is still low. Despite its age of 25 years, full XP is still in the “Innovators” stage. However, many really successful teams use a lot of the XP values and practices, knowingly or unknowingly.

One of the reasons of the low adoption rate of XP is the popularity of Scrum that holds a firm grip on the Agile Industrial Complex with its certificate pyramid scheme.

If you want to build a high-performing team, XP is as relevant today as it was 25 years ago.
